Why The Original Star Wars Trilogy Doesn’t Look The Same On Disney Plus
By WITNEY SEIBOLD
“Star Wars” was a massive success when the film debuted in 1977. However, the version audiences saw in theaters nearly 50 years ago differs from what’s available today.
Subtle alterations to the original film have been made over the decades, like new special effects, changes to the title card, picture quality improvements, and added scenes.
One notorious change is Han and Greedo’s showdown. The original version saw Han shoot first, but it was later changed in the 90s to show Greedo pulling the trigger before him.
The 90s version shows him missing, but later recuts of the scene have Han ducking out of the way. The new updates also added the gangster shouting an alien expletive, “McClunky!”
The version of “Star Wars” on Disney+ has undergone several polishes as well, adding more visual detail and color correction to the movie.
Unfortunately, the original theatrical cut is all but lost to time, as every version since 1997 has included the special edition scenes and digital effects.
