Why Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker Trimmed Luke And Leia's Lightsaber Fight
By WITNEY SEIBOLD
The 2019 film Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker featured flashbacks of Leia and Luke learning to hone their respective psychic powers. Leia was depicted wielding a lightsaber.
In a ScreenRant interview, stunt coordinator Eunice Huthart said the flashback sequence was achieved through extensive CGI motion capture attached to actual stunt performers.
Huthart and her team attempted to capture how Hamill and Fisher moved in 1983. Sadly, she also said the sequence was shortened considerably for "Skywalker."
In Huthart’s words: "... [T]here was a fight that's not in the movie; young Luke and young Leia did a lightsaber fight as a training scene flashback."
This scene was eventually edited out, likely for pacing reasons. "The Rise of Skywalker" isn't about Luke or Leia but instead follows a team of newer characters.
Only a few seconds of the two-minute sequence remain. Huthart said, "The young Luke and Leia, I would have loved that to have gone through, because [...] it was such hard work."
