Why Star Wars: A New Hope Removed Han Solo’s Love Interest
By WITNEY SEIBOLD
In the “Star Wars: Episode IV” scene, where Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi find Han Solo in a sleazy cantina on the planet Tatooine, Han was intended to have a love interest.
The deleted scene depicted Han and a woman named Jenny cozied up and kissing in a dingy corner of the cantina. Jenny wasn’t given any lines in the scene.
When Luke and Obi-wan walked over to converse, Han merely dismissed her with a curt "Sweetheart," and Jenny rose to depart. Actor Jenny Cresswell played the character.
At the time, Cresswell was known for hosting 63 episodes of the 1971 game show "Sale of the Century." She also appeared in a "Space: 1999" episode and the film "The Stud."
The character was not cut from the movie altogether and can be seen in other shots of the cantina. For "Star Wars" fans, Jenny is the one speaking to a Rodian (Greedo's species).
Jenny's excision could be because the director didn't want much sexuality in the sci-fi fairy tale. Or, he probably wanted Han to leave Tatooine without having him abandon a lover.
