Why Star Trek’s Michael Dorn Had A Problem With Worf’s Brother Kurn
By WITNEY SEIBOLD
In the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Sins of the Father," Kurn, Worf’s long-lost brother, revealed he had been in hiding since his father had been accused of a crime.
The crime was actually committed by the father of Duras, who was poised to sit on the Klingon High Council. Worf chose to keep all this secret, forcing Kurn to remain in hiding.
Actor Michael Dorn didn't like that Worf refused to stand up for his family's honor or defend his brother, and felt that the issue should have been more personal to Worf.
In "Captains' Logs" edited by Mark A. Altman and Edward Gross, Dorn revealed he had to make a lot of acting changes to account for Worf's decision.
He said, "There was a lot more involved in it than the writers realized [...] You look at Worf in a different light, and I've played him in a different light since that episode."
Following the episode, Worf was depicted with conflicting loyalties to Starfleet and the Klingons. Luckily, Worf and Kurn were later redeemed of their crime, and Worf killed Duras.
Sadly, in "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," Kurn met a sad fate because of Worf's loyalty to Starfleet. By then, however, Worf had evolved a lot, and the rejection was understandable.
