Why Star Trek Fans Were Furious About Voyager’s Threshold Episode

The “Star Trek: Voyager” episode “Threshold” saw Tom Paris and Captain Janeway evolve into giant newt-like creatures after traveling at infinite velocity.
Mark A. Altman and Edward Gross’ 1996 book, “Captains’ Logs Supplemental: The Unauthorized Guide to the New Trek Voyages,” details just how hated the idea was.
“Voyager” producer Jeri Taylor talked about the negative fan mail the show received about the newts and some of the technical details.
Taylor shared, “A lot of the ire seemed to be caused by the fact that we stated that no one had ever gone warp ten before.” Fans argued the original series exceeded that speed.
However, Taylor pointed out changes in the franchise’s lore, adding, “Gene [Roddenberry] determined at the beginning of ‘Next Gen’ that warp ten would be the limit.”
The story would be more gripping if “instead of it being the large-brained, glowing person, it would be full circle, back to our origins in the water,” Taylor explained.
