Why Rey And Kylo Couldn’t Kiss In Star Wars: The Last Jedi
By DANIELLE RYAN
Rian Johnson’s “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” introduced a new Force power to the franchise that allowed Rey and Kylo Ren to communicate with one another across
long distances.
This connection led to some rather charged moments together. Johnson explained his reasoning for creating their connection and why he didn’t let the two kiss.
In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Johnson shared that the story itself necessitated their Force connection, as the two needed a way to communicate.
Johnson considered having them fight or detaining one of the characters, but those options posed a problem in getting Rey and Kylo Ren on even footing.
When the interviewer suggested that the pair could just make out instead, Johnson explained how that would still prevent them from talking.
He said, “I wanted them to talk, and to talk enough to where we could go from ‘I hate you,’ to her being forced to actually engage with him.” This led to their Force connection.
Johnson added, “It’s a little bit of a riff on what happens with Vader and Luke at the end of ‘The Empire Strikes Back,’ but it’s entirely new in some regards.”
