Why Patrick J. Adams Asked Suits To Write Mike Out Of The Show

“Suits” has exploded on Netflix, but fans who were along for the ride during its USA run remember when Patrick J. Adams surprisingly left the show, which he did for noble reasons.
In an interview conducted with The Hollywood Reporter before the conclusion of Season 7 of “Suits,” Adams revealed what led him to decide to leave the show that made him a star.
“After seven seasons, really, eight years of being away from home and away from my now-wife [“Pretty Little Liars” star Troian Bellisario] and there was that pressure,” Adams said.
“Suits” had also reached the beginnings of a natural endpoint for Adam’s character, Mike Ross, after Season 6 followed Mike serving a two-year prison sentence for fraud.
As part of his terms of release, Mike promised to turn his back on the powerful, corporate legal machines he’d been serving, and it was uncertain where the character would go next.
Adams had similar story concerns. He said, “I started thinking about leaving at the end of the first half of Season 6. [...] I was a little unsure of what was left for him to do.”
During Season 7, Adams made the call, “Mike is just going to be another lawyer on television. That didn’t feel right for him. It didn’t feel right for where I was at in my life.”
After a three-hour conversation between “Suits” creator Aaron Korsh and Adams, they amicably hashed out a way to end Mike’s story. Adams said, “It feels like a brand-new start.”
