Why Marcia Strassman Was Only In Six Episodes Of M*A*S*H

Determining the right number of people to populate a TV show can be challenging, with creators sometimes unsuccessfully trying to force a character into the ensemble.
One such character who was trying to be shoehorned into a series was Marcia Strassman’s Nurse Margie Cutler in Season 1 of “M*A*S*H.”
Cutler was introduced in Episode 3, “Requiem for a Lightweight,” and served as a romantic interest before her final appearance in the season’s penultimate episode, “Ceasefire.”
The show’s creator Larry Gelbart explained they “just had too many regulars.” Things worked out for Strassman, though, as she would later be a regular on “Welcome Back, Kotter.”
