Why Lucifer’s Writers Snuck In So Many References To Bones
By VALERIE ETTENHOFER
"Lucifer," the cult-fave supernatural series, took the TV-show-in-a-TV-show trope up a notch. It used another primetime series as the catalyst for one of its best callbacks.
Although the two shows shared a network, getting usage rights was tricky. Co-showrunner Joe Henderson told TVLine that he had to fight for the initial "Bones" footage.
Henderson said, "It was the weirdest fight I've ever picked, where I was calling people up like, 'I need 'Bones,' I need 'Bones!'" Luckily, the show’s creator, Hart Hanson, agreed.
"Hart was always like, 'Don't worry about it — and if you want to poke fun, I have tough skin,'" Henderson added but said he told him it was “love letter material, full stop."
