Why It Took Decades For The Addams Family Members To Get Names
By WITNEY SEIBOLD
Since debuting in Charles Addams' 1938 New Yorker comic strip, the infamous Addams Family characters remained incredibly popular — though nameless — for decades.
Names became necessary only with the 1964 TV series production “The Addams Family.” Charles Addams suggested unconventional ones like “Repelli Addams” and “Pubert.”
The studio opted for “Gomez” and “Pugsley” over Addams' suggestions, while “Morticia” was decided early. “Wednesday” arose from a chance encounter at a college party in 1964.
Granny Frump, Uncle Fester, and Lurch received their names without interesting anecdotes, while beloved Cousin Itt, created for the TV show, was inspired by an Addams sketch.
