Why Indiana Jones’ Whip Was A Bad Weapon To Pick For Harrison Ford
By MIKE SHUTT
Indiana Jones, iconically portrayed by Harrison Ford in the titular franchise’s five films, loves his bullwhip. However, an old injury of Ford’s made cracking that whip very hard.
Before Ford became one of the biggest movie stars ever, he was a carpenter. As is typical for a profession like carpentry, you open yourself up to opportunities for injury.
In the book “The Making of Raiders of the Lost Ark,” Ford recounted one such injury: “I busted my wrist when I was a carpenter [...] I fell off a ladder at Valerie Harper’s house.”
That injury lingered for Ford, who said, “My wrist has never quite come back [...] When I started bullwhipping [in ‘Raiders of The Lost Ark’] I realized how important a wrist is.”
