When a beloved actor departs a show, fans are often left wondering why. Such was the case when Gina Torres left “Suits,” but thankfully, she explained her departure from the show.
Torres, who played Jessica Pearson, told the New York Times, “My contract was up, so this wasn’t a power play that went terribly wrong. My personal life needed to be tended to.”
Having to travel between the set of “Suits” in Toronto and Torres’ home in Los Angeles put a strain on her relationship with her family, and she could no longer balance the two.
The actress explained, “I think the public doesn’t understand the rigors of shooting a show for an actor, much less when you’re on location and away from home.”
Torres recalled telling “Suits” showrunner Aaron Korsh that “[i]t’s not that I don't love the show and love Jessica [...] But my life is my life, and I need to take care of it.”
The actress confirmed Pearson’s open-ended fate in Season 6 was by design, saying, “It was one of my pitches to Aaron.” Torres popped in for just a handful of Season 7 episodes.
Despite getting her wish, Torres and her husband of 14 years, actor Laurence Fishburne, separated shortly after her Times interview. The couple finalized their divorce in 2018.
