Why Demián Bichir Sees The Let The Right One In Series As Shakespeare
By DEBOPRIYAA DUTTA
Tom Alfredson’s film, “Let the Right One In,” is a classic vampire tale that is both devoid of emotion and drenched in companionship and love. The story is so classic it has spawned an American remake, a comic book series, and a Showtime series, starring Demián Bichir, who opened up about the show’s complexity and compared it to Shakespeare.
Although the comparison of a vampire show to Shakespeare might seem out of place, the actor explained that the two are similar because of their characters. Bichir plays Mark, who takes care of his vampire daughter, killing innocents to keep her alive. Because his character is rife with contrarian impulses and depth, Bichir compared him to Shakespeare’s Hamlet.
As Bichir said, “When I read the pilot, I saw… solid story-rich characters, beautifully written and dramatically powerful and three-dimensional characters,” adding “It’s almost like a Shakespearean character… it’s very Hamlet or Richard III.” From a character point of view, Bichir’s analogy makes sense, as these characters wrestle with complicated impulses, good and bad.
