Why Brad Pitt's Eye Looks So Different In 12 Monkeys
By RYAN SCOTT
Director Terry Gilliam's “12 Monkeys” has endured to become a classic mainstream 90s sci-fi film due in part to giving star Brad Pitt the opportunity to sidestep being typecast.
Rather than the classically handsome guy audiences had come to expect, Pitt portrayed mental patient Jeffrey Goynes, who held the key to humanity's salvation from a deadly virus.
Pitt helped develop the distinctive look essential to bringing the character to life. “He came up with the funny eye in Goynes' character,” Gilliam told The Hollywood Reporter.
“He's wearing a contact lens that shows his eye out the wrong way, because he was really working hard to get away from being a pretty face and be something interesting.”
After having been catapulted to stardom from the success of “Interview with the Vampire” and “Legends of the Fall” in the previous year, Pitt was unrecognizable in his new role.
Despite his now famous good looks, Pitt took creative risks rather than playing it safe, thereby helping to make “12 Monkeys” a box office smash, with a successful TV show spinoff.
