Who Is Voicing Darth Vader In Obi-Wan Kenobi? It's Complicated
By LYVIE SCOTT
With Hayden Christensen reprising his role as Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader in Disney+’s “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” Star Wars fans had been wondering if they would get to hear James Earl Jones’ iconic Darth Vader voice as well. They finally got the answer in the third episode of the series when they heard Jones’ voice and saw his name in the credits, but that wasn’t the complete story.
“Kenobi” also credited Respeecher for voice conversion services in the episode, so it’s likely that old audio of Jones’ voice was modified through cloning software. It’s also telling that when Christensen was asked if Jones would return to voice Darth Vader, the actor simply replied with “No comment.”
While the voice cameo was a pleasant surprise for longtime fans — Jones’ first since “Rogue One” — finding out that it was from technology and not from Jones himself was probably a little disappointing. While it’s inevitable that his voice has changed, another option could’ve been to use Matt Sloan or Scott Lawrence, who have voiced the character in other projects.
