Who Is The Alien Rock Band In The Guardians Of The Galaxy Holiday Special?
By WITNEY SEIBOLD
In James Gunn's "The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special," Star-Lord is approached by a band of space aliens who sing about an oblique Earth holiday called Christmas. The aliens, however, only have a vague idea of how Christmas operates and get many details incorrect in their tune, "I Don't Know What Christmas Is (But Christmastime is Here)."
Fans of 1990s Texas-based alt-country music will recognize those performers as the members of the group Old 97's, Gunn's favorite band. When Gunn began making the first "Guardians of the Galaxy" in 2014, he hoped to work with them, but they were beyond the mandated 1970s vintage music that Star-Lord would be listening to.
This holiday special was finally the opportunity Gunn needed to work with his favorite band, and band member Ken Bethea was overwhelmed to be part of the MCU. The band’s music has appeared on the soundtracks of "Hope Floats,” “The Break-Up,” and many other films, but acting as an alien band was a first for them.
