Who Is Sunspot, X-Men ‘97’s Newest Mutant Recruit?
By ETHAN ANDERTON
Marvel's "X-Men '97" revival brings back many fan-favorite characters like Cyclops, Wolverine, Gambit, and Jubilee, along with some fresh faces like the recruit, Robert da Costa.
We briefly see da Costa's abilities, and although we never hear his mutant name, fans will recognize him as Sunspot. He originated in “Marvel Graphic Novel #4: The New Mutants.”
Da Costa, a Brazilian kid, discovers his powers after a soccer team attacks him. He then falls into a trap set by a mutant-hating faction led by the infamous Donald Pierce.
This leads to the death of his girlfriend, Juliana. With the assistance of mutants named Karma, Psyche, and eventually Wolfsbane, they pursue Donald Pierce to seek justice.
Because of this, Professor X offers to train the five teens, forming the New Mutants. As they develop their powers, the team embarks on missions to the Amazon, Asgard, and beyond.
While we're unsure what his character portrayal will lead to, fans can anticipate him resembling this series' "Jubilee," growing in confidence alongside newfound friendships.
