When Everyone Seemed To Hate Anne Hathaway, One Director Saved The Day
By JOE ROBERTS
The early 2010s saw a sudden wave of animosity aimed at Oscar-winner Anne Hathaway. “Hathahate” left the actress in internet-induced despair from all the online negativity.
She told Vanity Fair, “A lot of people wouldn’t give me roles because they were so concerned about how toxic my identity had become online.” Luckily, not everyone felt that way.
According to Hathaway, director Christopher Nolan seemed entirely unconcerned or unaware of all the hate she received online, fully embracing the actress.
She said, “I had an angel in Christopher Nolan, who did not care about that and gave me one of the most beautiful roles I’ve had in one of the best films that I’ve been a part of.”
Hathaway would star as Dr. Amelia Brand in the 2014 sci-fi epic Interstellar, Nolan’s heartfelt project, which championed love as a vital emotion for humanity and technology.
While Hathaway still isn’t sure whether Nolan knew he was “backing [her] at the time,” it nonetheless “had that effect,” possibly saving her career from losing momentum.
