What Star Trek’s Walter Koenig Had Planned For His Canceled TNG Cameo
By WITNEY SEIBOLD
"Star Trek: Generations" opened in 1994 with a prologue involving Kirk, Scotty, and Chekov before flashing forward 87 years to the "Next Generation" characters.
However, fans may be surprised to know that Chekov (Walter Koenig) almost appeared on "Next Generation" prior to that. Koenig told StarTrek.com how it almost came to be.
During the final season of "Next Generation," Paramount called Koenig to discuss having him reprise Chekov as long as the story didn't involve time travel.
Koenig thought of a way to cleverly connect Chekov to Worf. While sitting with other writers, though, Koenig was shocked when executive producer Rick Berman ended the meeting.
The show was in its last season and Koenig was already in talks to be in the movie. The idea never materialized, and Keonig had to wait to be with the "Next Generation" crew.
