Wednesday Is Ditching One Of Its Worst Plotlines In Season 2
By VALERIE ETTENHOFER
One of the most egregious narrative mistakes in Season 1 of the Netflix series “Wednesday” was an incredibly bland love triangle with Wednesday (Jenna Ortega) stuck in the middle.
Much of Season 1's runtime involved Wednesday looking either visibly annoyed or, in rarer cases, secretly a little bit happy when two boys from school repeatedly tried to date her.
This plotline was maddening for longtime “Addams Family” fans because Wednesday has historically been portrayed as a confident lone wolf who doesn't care for romantic love.
Christina Ricci's Wednesday, a cult hero, never longed to be anything but dangerous and different, so seeing Ortega’s Wednesday pine for a normal dating life was frustrating.
The male suitors for Ortega’s Wednesday were also generic. Her first love interest was Tyler (Hunter Doohan), a barista and classmate who turned out to be a monster called a Hyde.
Her other love interest, Xavier (Percy Hynes White), had magical artistic powers and was framed for the Nevermore murders. Overall, Tyler and Xavier were both forgettable.
Thankfully, series star and newly promoted producer Ortega confirmed to Variety that the love triangle will officially be no more when “Wednesday” returns to Netflix for Season 2.
Ortega explained, “We're ditching any romantic love interest for Wednesday, which is really great,” adding, “We want to lean into the horror aspect of the show a little bit more."
