Val Kilmer Was Going to Be in the Willow Series Up Until the Last Minute
By SANDY SCHAEFER
Val Kilmer’s memorable character in Madmartigan in 1988’s “Willow” was the perfect foil to Warwick Davis’ Willow, and their wayward buddy dynamic lent just the right mix of humor and heart. Unfortunately, fans hoping to revisit that magical duo will be disappointed to learn that Kilmer will not take part in the "Willow" TV series on Disney+.
Showrunner Jonathan Kasdan told Entertainment Weekly, “I remember going to see Val right after this thing started to get some momentum, and I said, 'Listen, we're doing this. And the whole world wants Madmartigan back.' And he was like, 'Not as much as I do.'" According to Kasdan, Kilmer was all set to reprise his role for the series right up until the last minute.
Sadly, the onset of the COVID pandemic made it impossible for Kilmer to return for "Willow" due to being immunocompromised from his battle with throat cancer. Despite this sad setback, Kasdan has declined to rule out the idea of Val Kilmer reprising the role in the future.
