The “Star Wars” universe is filled with many wondrous technological and cultural advances, but it's not often that the viewers see items found in our own world, such as money.

While cash is rarely seen in the franchise, the South Pacific island country Niue has been accepting "Star Wars" branded money in the form of metal coins or rectangles since 2011.

According to Chip & Co., the New Zealand Mint, which is responsible for printing small, collectible "Star Wars" coins as high-end souvenirs, is allowing this strange experiment.

These gold and silver coins are printed with scenes from “Star Wars” or are in the shape of characters' heads and bodies. They can run from $95 to $800 USD, depending on the coin.

However, the current exchange doesn’t match their value as collectibles, with the $800 40th anniversary “Return of the Jedi” coin only worth about $15.70 USD.
