The Writers Of Rogue One Reveal Their Idea For
An Unmade

With “Andor” finishing its Season 1, Gary Whitta, the “Rogue One” screenwriter, tweeted about a “Star Wars” television idea he had brainstormed with co-writer Chris Weitz. The story would be set between “Return of the Jedi” and “The Force Awakens” and would see a successful Rebel Alliance putting together an elite intelligence team to hunt down Imperial war criminals.
While the idea is interesting, the tweet’s wording suggests that neither Whitta nor Weitz pitched the story to the Lucasfilm executives. If the two writers’ hypothetical show was made and had a similar tone to “Andor,” the series could have been an intense thriller as canon books and comics show, the Empire didn’t immediately collapse after “Return of the Jedi.”
The strength in “Andor” and “Rogue One” is from showing the perspective of ordinary people and the battles that they have had to fight during this tumultuous time. The “Star Wars Story” spin-offs were promised to explore different genres and tones from the regular “Star Wars Saga,” so having Lucasfilm continue to embrace variety and unique ideas could help keep the franchise fresh.
