The Unexpected Prop Star Trek Borrowed From Gilligan's Island
By JOSHUA MEYER
While at first glance “Gilligan’s Island” and “Star Trek” don’t seem to share a connection, they actually aired at around the same time with the former running from 1964 to 1967 and the latter airing from 1966 to 1969. In reruns, viewers may have been able to catch this memorable “Gilligan’s Island” costume that was reused in a “Star Trek” episode.
In the “Gilligan’s Island” Season 3 episode, “Lovey’s Secret Admirer,” Gilligan appears as Mrs. Lovey Howell’s fairy godfather in a dream sequence. He wears a yellow-and-green robe and his chest has an image of the sun with an eye in the middle. This same costume then appears in the “Star Trek” Season 2 episode, “Catspaw.”
In “Catspaw,” Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, and Dr. McCoy escape from a dungeon on an alien planet only to be transported to the throne room of the alien villain, Korob. When Korob makes his entrance, he is wearing the same costume that Gilligan wore as the fairy grandmother.
