The Tomb Raider Games Inspired A Bizarre Experimental Film
By WITNEY SEIBOLD
Gus Van Sant said in a 2003 interview with Filmmaker Magazine that he was inspired to make the movie "Gerry" after playing the video game "Tomb Raider."
Van Sant liked the video game visuals that kept Lara centered on the screen with the camera always facing the back of her head and felt the film should employ a similar tactic.
Few films are told entirely from a first-person perspective. Van Sant was impressed by the aesthetics of gaming and felt that it was possible to alter filmmaking to match.
With the advent of lightweight digital cameras and drones, this type of visual language is now common. Ultimately, the POV idea was left behind, but the spirit was kept alive.
