The Story Of Keira Knightley’s Sabé Is Darker Than The Star Wars Movies Show
By LYVIE SCOTT
While Queen Amidala's decoy Sabé was integral in "The Phantom Menace," she was never seen again in any "Star Wars" films. However, she appears in the comics and novels.
Novels like E.K. Johnston’s “Star Wars Queen’s Shadow” helped flesh out Sabé’s adventures before the Clone Wars, helping slaves on Tattooine gain their freedom.
Although their friendship is strained in “Queen’s Hope,” Sabé and other handmaidens vowed to find Padmé’s killer and avenge her death after the Clone Wars.
Sabé and her group, the Amidalans, eventually face Darth Vader himself nearly 20 years into the Empire’s reign in Greg Pak and Raffaele Ienco’s 2020 “Darth Vader” comic run.
Vader overpowers the rebels, but Sabé and the Amidalans manage to escape. Later, Sabé attempts to sabotage Vader’s operations and successfully turns his troops against each other.
Vader recognizes Sabé’s value as an operative. He also learns that their goals align: retribution for Padmé’s death and to bring a sense of order to the galaxy.
Sabé and Vader eventually worked together to free a group of former slaves from Tatooine, many of whom Vader had known as a child. However, their relationship became more complex.
Sabé knows Vader’s true identity and, trying to honor her friend’s memory, attempts to redeem him. Unfortunately, her desire to do so blinds her to Vader’s darkest crimes.
The Amidalans try to save Sabé from Vader’s influence, but she is too committed to his redemption. This determination leads to her downfall when Vader loses control of his power.
Vader unleashes the full scope of his power, sending Sabé out into the sea. Sabé hasn’t been seen since, which suggests she’s dead, though there's still a chance she could return.
