The Star Trek Failure That William Shatner Still Regrets

William Shatner's highest-profile directing gig was "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier" in 1989. To this day, it's considered the franchise's least favorite movie.
In a recent interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Shatner expressed regret over how "Star Trek V" turned out and blamed his inexperience as a director.
He wanted the starship to go in search of God, but Paramount management pushed back, concerned that deciding who was God would alienate nonbelieving viewers.
They changed it to a god-like alien, but Shatner said, "Then it was a series of my inabilities to deal with the management and the budget. I failed. In my mind, I failed horribly."
Trekkies weren't satisfied with "Star Trek V," and neither was Shatner. He said what he regrets most is "not being equipped emotionally to deal with a large motion picture."
Shatner added, "So in the absence of my power, the power vacuum filled with people that didn't make the decisions I would've made."
