The Secret Die Hard Spin-Off Starring Denzel Washington

Initially written as a "Dirty Harry" sequel, 1991's "Ricochet" ended up accidentally being a "Cape Fear" knockoff. Now, it seems it's also technically a stealth "Die Hard" spinoff.
Mary Ellen Trainor's role of reporter Gail Wallens isn't noticeable in "Die Hard," but Trainor reprises her role in "Ricochet," hinting that the two movies share the same universe.
Additionally, "Die Hard" screenwriter Stephen De Souza rewrote chunks of its script after it was rejected for the "Dirty Harry" sequel, which further strengthens the theory.
There are also other similarities. Both John McClane (Bruce Willis) in "Die Hard" and Nick Styles (Denzel Washington) in "Ricochet" wear a dirt-covered vest and carry a Beretta 92.
