The Real Reason The Rookie: Feds Was Canceled By ABC

In 2023, "The Rookie: Feds" was prematurely canceled after just one season, and Deadline credited WGA and SAG strikes (for writers and actors, respectively) as the cause.
The series spent months in limbo amidst the dual labor movements for writers and actors. However, series co-creator Alexi Hawley stated that the reasoning isn't quite simple.
It's clear that ABC lost something by letting go of Niecy Nash-Betts from the show, and Hawley hinted that a crucial part of decisions like this was the industry-wide shifts.
Moving away from blaming the strikes, Hawley told Deadline that "it's a bigger conversation than that." He added, "A lot had to do with the forces that led to [the strikes]."
In 2024's Television Critics Hour event, Hawley said that "the consolidation of the industry [and] the economic impact the streaming wars have had [...]" led to the cancellation.
