The Real and Ridiculous Notes Gravity Falls Creators Received From Disney
By SHANIA RUSSELL
The beloved Disney show “Gravity Falls” is filled with clever jokes that push the boundary of typical content found on the network. Creator Alex Hirsh reveals to fans via Twitter some of the strangest censorship requests he got while working on the show.
Disney’s Standard and Practices Division had many revision notes ranging from words or phrases that might be seen as inappropriate slang to lines that might allude to fetishes. Hirsch often responded to these requests by challenging their logic and simply asking “why?” with many of the answers sounding ridiculous.
One particular request was to remove an interaction between two male characters because it might be seen as romantic. By the series finale, Sheriff Blubs and Deputy Durland’s relationship was confirmed, and with it, some progress with LGBTQ+ representation was made.
