The One Part Of Star Wars’ Script Alec Guinness Couldn’t Stand
By MICHAEL BOYLE
In a 1977 interview, Obi-Wan Kenobi actor Alec Guinness shared the joys of working on “Star Wars,” but he had one specific issue with George Lucas's script during the filming.
Guinness said, “It seemed to me the dialogue was pretty ropey.” He added that he later met Lucas and worked on changing the dialogue to be more natural.
Harrison Ford told GQ in 2017 that he also didn’t like the dialogue. He told Gerorge, “‘You can type this s***, but you sure can't say it! Move your mouth when you're typing!’”
Lucas agreed with them, as he told Empire in 1999, “My dialogue is very utilitarian and is designed to move things forward. I'm not Shakespeare. It's not designed to be poetic.”
