The Most Important Line In Forrest Gump, According To Tom Hanks
By JOE ROBERTS
In an interview with The New York Times, Tom Hanks was asked about “Forest Gump” and if it "overcame its nostalgic impulses or succumbed to them."
Hanks says the moment that Lieutenant Dan (Gary Sinise) arrives for Gump and Jenny’s (Robin Wright) wedding proves the film isn't an "artificial piece of pop melodrama."
Forrest sees Dan for the first time since he was fitted with titanium alloy legs, and says, “Magic legs; Lieutenant Dan.” Hanks calls it “undeniable heartbreaking humanity.”
Hanks explained that in those four words, Forrest and Dan understand all they went through and “feel gratitude for every ounce of pain and tragedy that they survived.”
“That's some intangible [expletive] right there," Hanks surmises. Filmmaker Robert Zemeckis agreed and said “Forrest Gump” was a story about all different types of love.
