The Menu Gave Nicholas Hoult And Anya Taylor-Joy A Lot Of Room To Improvise
By MATTHEW BILODEAU
In "The Menu," we see Anya Taylor-Joy's Margot interactions with Nicholas Hoult's Tyler among the 12 wealthy socialites who take a boat to a remote island, where an extravagantly costly meal turns into a wicked night of twists and surprises. The two actors show how well they work off one another in their conversations, and based on Hoult's words, this wasn't an accident.
During an interview, Hoult said, "Because there was so much improvisation and time that we were kind of on-screen but not actually with scripted dialogue, we just kind of get to know each other through making up stories and improvising as the characters." In a film as meticulously prepared as "The Menu," the two made sure to make their conversations feel natural to their characters.
The mystery of this dinner is told to the audience from the perspective of the diners, while also showing how these characters interact with the outside world. Hoult and Taylor-Joy are great at making you feel as if you're on a notably one-sided date when you first meet Tyler and Margot, and as you watch them both respond to the night in their own unique ways, everything comes together.
