The MCU’s Current Problems Were Predicted Way Back During Age Of Ultron

The MCU's 2008 to 2019 run is one of the most impressive achievements in commercial filmmaking history, drawing in massive audiences for nearly every movie that came out.
Fans were invested in the overarching Thanos saga, but this wasn’t ideal for those who wanted their films to work as standalone experiences, a feeling Joss Whedon had in 2015.
Whedon’s "Avengers: Age of Ultron" is little more than a setup for other events and stories that would occur in later films, something the writer-director tried to
fight against.
Whedon shared, “No matter how much they may talk about, 'Well, this is going to lead to some terrible stuff down the line,' in my movie, it's designed to be a complete experience.”
The writer-director pointed out the dangers of what he called “serialized storytelling” in movies that are similar to episodic TV, calling it “a dreadful mistake.”
According to Whedon, the worst thing he heard at a test screen for “Age of Ultron” was one of the viewers saying, “Well, that was a great setup for the next thing!”
Marvel has yet to dive into the Kang saga. Based on the box office numbers, moviegoers are tired of these go-nowhere episodes and want a more compelling, contained narrative.
