The Major Advantage The Dune Messiah Movie Has Over The Book
By MICHAEL BOYLE
Although the adaptation of “Dune: Messiah” faces many obstacles, Denis Villeneuve’s next film has advantages over the source material.
In an interview with Mashable, screenwriter Jon Spaihts explained that changes made in “Dune: Part Two” have clarified the themes author Frank Herbert wanted to highlight.
He said, “I think Frank Herbert came away from [Dune] troubled a little bit that perhaps he had put too much of a real crown on his savior he was trying to warn people about.”
Spaihts added, “So, ‘Dune Messiah’ really is his reply to himself and his reply to ‘Dune.’ It’s like the second act of ‘Into the Woods’ where everything falls apart.”
With Chani becoming the mouthpiece for the source material’s more subtle anti-Messiah themes, the end of “Part Two” better sets the plot for “Messiah” and the coming issues.
According to Spaihts, “We'll see Chani and Princess Irulan clashing over the destiny of the Atreides family,” implying much of how "Dune: Part 3" will play out.
