The Lowest-Rated Best Picture Oscar Winner On Rotten Tomatoes
By NICK STANIFORTH
1929's "The Broadway Melody" won what is now known as the Best Picture Oscar, yet it is the lowest-rated Best Picture winner on Rotten Tomatoes with a score of only 42%.
"The Broadway Melody" is a musical that tells the story of sisters Queenie and Hank Mahoney trying to make it big on Broadway, only to get caught in a classic love triangle.
Besides being the first Best Picture winner to use sound, "The Broadway Melody" also dared to feature a Technicolor sequence, which probably explains why it earned the accolade.
To quote RT’s critics consensus, the film is "interesting as an example of an early Hollywood musical, but otherwise, it's essentially bereft of appeal
for modern audiences."
