The Live-Action Avatar: The Last Airbender Makes One Major Change To Sokka
By DEVIN MEENAN
The upcoming live-action remake of “Avatar: The Last Airbender” is making a significant change to Sokka's character, as shared by actor Kiawentiio who plays Katara with EW.
The alteration involves Sokka's sexist behavior, originating from the patriarchal Southern Water Tribe. He initially displays chauvinistic traits due to his cultural upbringing.
The original show takes pains to showcase the flaws in his attitude, emphasizing that simply being a man doesn't automatically make him strong or right, often showing him failing.
The turning point in Sokka's character in the animated arc occurs in the episode “The Warriors of Kyoshi,” where he learns to respect and appreciate the strength of women warriors.
However, in the live-action adaptation, Sokka's sexism is omitted completely, raising concerns about its impact on his character growth and valuable lessons for the audience.
Even Ian Ousley, who portrays Sokka, supported the decisions, noting, “There are things that were redirected just because it might play a little differently [in live-action].”
