The It’s Always Sunny Gang Regrets One Especially Gross Dee Gag
By SHAE SENNETT
For her role as Dee Reynolds in "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," Kaitlin Olsen is a trooper when it comes to physical comedy, including one especially tough bit in season 5.
In the episode "Mac and Charlie Write A Movie," Dee is an extra on an M. Night Shyamalan film. She's an extra pretending to be a corpse who keeps attempting to steal the spotlight.
Unfortunately, the crew failed to consider how uncomfortable Olson would be in the fake blood she had to wear when they made the shooting schedule for this episode.
On The Always Sunny Podcast, Rob McElhenney recalled, "There were four or five scenes in four different locations with her wearing all of that makeup."
He continued, "So she put it on in the morning, and had to wear it all day." Glenn Howerton speculated that the episode's director was to blame for the shooting schedule.
He said they wanted to shoot the episode "in the most efficient, cost-effective way possible" regardless of the actors' comfort. He added, "We would never do that now."
"That was one of my hardest days that ended in tears," Olson admitted on another episode of the podcast. The real trouble came when the fake blood caked onto her skin and hair.
She recalled, "It starts to dry and every move you make your hair is ripping out of your body [...] I had pebbles and rocks stuck all over my body."
