The Haunting Of Hill House Scene That Scared The Cast In Real Life

Mike Flanagan’s “The Haunting of Hill House,” a loosely based adaptation of Shirley Jackson’s novel of the same name, is one of the greatest horror TV shows ever made.
The series is a beautiful exploration of grief and provides many tear-jerking moments; however, the show is also filled with terrifying scenes, with one that even scared the cast.
As Shirley and Theo Crain argue with one another while driving back to Hill House, their dead sister Nell shows up and delivers a spine-chilling scream.
Several cast members have shared their horrified reactions to the scream, with even Nell actress Victoria Pedretti sharing, “I knew it was happening [and] I screamed — at myself!”
The scene works so well because there are only a few of these types of jump scares in the show, and it occurs during an emotional moment between the Crain sisters.
The characters’ horrified reaction is genuine, as Flanagan revealed he told Pedretti “before [they] read the first take to come in substantially earlier than the written cue.”
