The Flash Isn't A Box Office Bomb, It’s A Box Office Disaster
By RYAN SCOTT
DC’s latest blockbuster film, “The Flash,” hasn’t performed well in theaters, but calling it a bomb undersells just how poorly the superhero movie is actually doing.
Earning only $55 million during its debut, “The Flash” has seen a dramatic 72% drop from its first weekend to its second, where it took in only $15.26 million.
The movie has made $210.9 million globally against its $200 million budget before marketing, making it unlikely that Warner Bros. will recoup its investment.
To add insult to injury, Disney’s “Elemental” — which had a similarly disappointing box office debut — managed to hold quite well, grossing $18.4 million in its second weekend.
“The Flash” joins other recently failed DC films, including “Shazam! Fury of the Gods,” which only made $132 million worldwide in total against a $125 million budget.
DC still has two more blockbusters in 2023 — “Blue Beetle” and “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” — that could help guide the studio in the right direction for the DC Universe reboot.
If both films fail, DC Studios executives James Gunn and Peter Safran could have trouble selling the new franchise to audiences, which begins with 2025’s “Superman: Legacy.”
