The Dog Actor In Prey Was Adopted Especially For The Movie And She Was A 'Hot Mess'
By DANIELLE RYAN
The two stars of Dan Trachtenberg's “Prey” are the Comanche warrior Naru, played by Amber Midthunder, and her dog Sarii, played by Coco, an American dingo who was adopted just for the film. In an interview, Trachtenberg and Midthunder described their experience filming with the untrained, rambunctious, but very lovable Coco.
Because Coco was not a canine actor, Trachtenberg said it was “[a]lways a nail-biting moment for us on set, 'Is Coco gonna like, make her mark and do what she needs to do?'” While it took effort, Coco always did make the finish line, which the director described as “very exciting, lots of cheers would happen when we finally got a great take with Coco."
Midthunder, who spent the most time with Coco, described the pooch as “a little bit of a hot mess — but in a sweet way [...] and she just happened to be very high-energy.” She said of Coco’s unpredictability while filming, “sometimes she'd do it, sometimes she wouldn't. But obviously, it all ended up fine, because she was great, and everybody loves her."
