The Divisive Steven Spielberg Film That Inspired The New Wicked
By WITNEY SEIBOLD
The first part of a massive two-film adaptation of the Broadway musical "Wicked" directed by the venerable Jon M. Chu releases in theaters in November 2024.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, the filmmaker admitted that he wanted his "Wicked" movies to resemble Steven Spielberg's not-very-good "Peter Pan" adaptation "Hook" from 1991.
"Hook" is a controversial choice as the film's quality is hotly debated. Overall, the film is silly and overstuffed but somehow feels simultaneously sloppy and too clean.
Chu had just turned 12 when "Hook" came out, so he was in the perfect age bracket to fall in love with the movie and carry its strange whimsy into his adulthood, although it was made before CGI.
Spielberg built ships and a Lost Boys clubhouse; Chu wanted to use similar filmmaking techniques to create a fantasy kingdom and capture the texture of real-life sets and vehicles.
