The Classic Steve McQueen Western You Can Stream For Free
By JEREMY SMITH
In 1960, John Sturges introduced a new kind of gunslinging antihero in his "The Magnificent Seven," led by Steve McQueen, which is now streaming for free on Tubi, Pluto or Roku.
Right when the Western fans were in the market for new, more conflicted heroes, Sturges accessed the brilliance of Akira Kurosawa's 1956 Japanese masterpiece, "Seven Samurai."
Inspired by Kurosawa's work, Sturges mounted a confident, expansive, and rousing Western that rewired audiences' expectations of what the genre could do.
It's not overly transgressive or revisionist, but it presents a vision of the West where survival is contingent on appealing to a less vicious class of outlaws.
