The Best Thrillers of 2022, Ranked
By LEX BRISCUSO
12. Dual
Sarah (Karen Gillian) has a double created to replace her following a terminal illness diagnosis; however, she survives and must fight the double to the death for permission to continue living her own life. The high-stakes drama is combined with a dystopian tinge, a top-notch cast, and a sharp directorial eye, making for an edge-of-your-seat thriller.
11. Emily the Criminal
"Emily the Criminal" follows Emily (Aubrey Plaza), a debt-ridden Los Angeleno, who gets pulled into the criminal underworld of credit card scams and other financial offenses in an effort to dig herself out of the hole she finds herself in. Plaza gives a firecracker performance, and her desperation and quick thinking make this thriller actually feel like a thriller.
10. Deep Water
Based on the novel of the same name by Patricia Highsmith, "Deep Water" follows a married couple, Vic and Melinda, who play romantic and adulterous head games with one another in an effort to stave off the demise of their relationship. The outlandish plot and script lend themselves to a bit of criticism, but they help build a solid thriller with a unique voice.
9. Tár
Cate Blanchett's turn as Lydia Tár, a world-renowned composer and conductor, is spellbinding, as her character falls from grace and international favor when her past comes back to haunt her. The fact that Todd Field wrote and directed the film works in its favor, and once things start getting bad for Tár, viewers won't be taking a breath until the film's final moments.
8. Bodies Bodies...
"Bodies Bodies Bodies" follows a group of friends who are stuck at a family mansion during a hurricane and play a game to pass the time, which ends with a dead body and the group trying to figure out who the killer is. It's less of a horror movie and more of a thriller because of the lighthearted fun it gives audiences in its script, directorial choices, and even its pulsing score.
