The Best Movie Scores And Soundtracks Of 2022, Ranked
By JAMIE GERBER
15. X
Ti West’s “X” is a slasher throwback set in rural Texas in 1979 that follows a group of aspiring filmmakers who think they’re making a porn film but are actually starring in a horror movie. The music from Tyler Bates and Chelsea Wolfe contributes to the film’s success, with an eerie and atmospheric synth-driven score and evocative, breathy vocals.
14. Fresh
Mimi Cave’s thriller, "Fresh” tackles the scariest subject of all: Modern romance. Alex Somers’ score provides the perfect backdrop because there is a sinister quality lurking beneath its dreamy veneer. Featuring artists like Animotion, Peter Cetera, Blood Orange, and Duran Duran, the soundtrack both belies and reinforces the horror of today’s dating scene.
13. Pinocchio
Guillermo del Toro’s take on Pinocchio just goes to show how creatively the filmmaker approaches his projects, and he breathes new life into the story. Along with stunning visuals, the film features a score from Alexandre Desplat, who created the score using only wooden instruments to “reflect the soul of the film."
12. The Northman
Creating a score for Roger Eggers’ “The Northman” couldn’t have been easy, particularly for Robin Carolan and Sebastian Gainsborough, who are known for their electronic music. The duo worked on the soundtrack for 18 months and used archaic instruments to create an anxiety-inducing and adrenaline-pumping soundtrack.
11. Wakanda Forever
After the soundtrack of “Black Panther,” “Wakanda Forever” had a tough legacy to follow, yet the film did so perfectly with its score and soundtrack. Ludwig Göransson’s score reflects the film's multicultural dimensions, and with a soundtrack that features Rihanna's first music in five years, the music lives up to the “Black Panther” legacy.
