The Avatar: The Last Airbender Mystery The Show Refused To Solve

By RAFAEL MOTAMAYOR
One of the most celebrated cartoons in history, "Avatar: The Last Airbender" ended with an epic finale that tied up many plot threads — except for what happened to Zuko's mother.
In the finale, the newly crowned Fire Lord Zuko confronts his father about the fate of his mother, Ursa. Viewers almost got the answer, until a co-creator stepped in.
At a Comic-Con panel in 2008, director Joaquim Dos Santos confirmed the team storyboarded what happened to his mother, but it was "quickly vetoed" by Michael Dante DiMartino.
Fortunately for fans, co-creator Bryan Konietzko pushed to have Zuko ask about his mother’s whereabouts — the only hint audiences got that this plot thread hadn't been forgotten.
In an audio commentary, Konietzko said: "It's not so much the information, where she is, it's the fact that their positions are reversed now, and Zuko has control over his father."
Ursa’s whereabouts were discovered in 2013’s "Avatar: The Last Airbender — The Search" graphic novel. She had returned to her hometown, but eventually reunited with Zuko.
