The 14 Best Rom-Coms Of The 1980s, Ranked
By LIAM GAUGHAN
14. Valley Girl
Nicolas Cage has given so many wild performances that it's easy to forget that he was a teen heartthrob starting with his breakout role in 1983’s "Valley Girl."
In this fun spin on "Romeo and Juliet," Cage stars as L.A. punk Randy, who meets valley girl Julie Richman (Deborah Foreman) when they both attend a wild party.
13. Splash
In a literal fish-out-of-water story, a mermaid (Daryl Hannah) washes ashore Cape Cod, becomes human, and meets a man (Tom Hanks) who has had a crush on her for 20 years.
Hanks and Hannah are perfectly cast and hilarious. John Candy's side performance makes the film even funnier, but he doesn't detract from their touching love story at the center.
12. Romancing the Stone
This love story features romance novelist (Kathleen Turner) and an eccentric adventurer (Michael Douglas) solving a mystery in the Columbian jungle.
With their wildly different personalities clashing, there is plenty of humor. Douglas’ character isn’t as experienced as he claims and often gets them in danger, not out of it.
11. Sixteen Candles
The raunchy "Sixteen Candles" follows the embarrassing misadventures of Samantha (Molly Ringwald) on a birthday only made worse by everyone forgetting it.
Samantha juggles chaos at home over her sister’s wedding, a crush on a jock (Michael Schoeffling), and a relentless but obnoxious freshman (Anthony Michael Hall) flirting with her.
10. Something Wild
A Wall Street player (Jeff Daniels) and a drifter (Melanie Griffith) have to fake a relationship to avoid the cops and her dangerous ex-husband (Ray Liotta).
This screwball comedy goes to absurd places, and while there are conventionally funny sequences, "Something Wild" has a chaotic, violent edge that makes it unique.
