The 10 Scariest Movie Monsters Of 2022
By CHAD COLLINS
Lion
In "Beast," Idris Elba and his children visit the Mopani Reserve in South Africa for a vacation, only to run into a rogue lion on the prowl, killing anyone and everyone who gets in his way. The central lion looks fantastic, getting plenty of opportunities to menace Elba and his children; plus, the film has plenty of icky, gooey gore as the lion tears through desperate survivors.
Killer Tree
In "The Killing Tree," the body of the killer inhabits a Christmas tree and tears partygoers in half, wrapping his branches around them in computer-generated, Grand Guignol glory. Sure, the tree is mostly just a performer in a tree suit running around, but it is considerably more convincing than
it sounds.
Ethan
"Run Sweetheart Run" is a genuinely terrifying fight for survival as Ella Balinska's Cherie runs through the streets, ceaselessly pursued by Pilou Asbæk's Ethan, a demon who controls all the men of the world. Asbæk delivers a fantastic performance, and as his antagonist rips off heads and tears bodies asunder, he earns his frightening status tenfold.
Predator
In "Prey," the Predator is scarier than ever, ably decapitating French trappers and easily hunting its prey through the vast plains. The titular baddie from the Predator franchise may not have the most remarkable movie track record of late, but director Dan Trachtenberg's version is scary again, which feels like something akin to a miracle.
Doppelgänger
Doppelgänger in "Hatching" is the cutest, yet scariest, skeletal bird creature imaginable — a marvel of special effects work with the kind of design and actualization that would make the likes of Rick Baker proud. Its inceptive, bird-like form is a hallmark of 2022's horror; it's the best-designed monster in arguably the best monster movie of the year.
