Ted Lasso's James Lance Explains Trent Crimm’s Unspoken Backstory
By SHANIA RUSSELL
While not every story decision made for Season 3 of “Ted Lasso” has been a success, one standout is Trent Crimm becoming a regular and exploring who the journalist really is.
The former sports writer for The Independent might be a mystery to the viewers, but actor James Lance has been crafting Trent’s backstory since his first day in the role.
Lance brought his ideas to star and co-creator Jason Sudeikis, sharing, “I said, ‘Hey, I think the reason he’s the way he is, is because he’s got this kind of oppressive father.’”
He added that he believed Trent “wasn’t living the life he wanted to live,” which is reflected at the end of Season 2 when the journalist quits his job at The Independent.
Sudeikis responded, “This whole show is about bad dads”; however, “Ted Lasso” is also about personal growth, with even minor characters experiencing changes over the series.
Trent first appears trying to expose Ted as a joke — a sentiment Lance believes his character’s father would have had for the writer — but their interactions change him.
Lance explained, “Trent constantly observes the way that Ted handles situations.” After having to write about Ted’s panic attacks, Trent decides it’s time for a change.
