Star Wars’ Phantom Menace Duel Was Decided By A Five Year Old
By ETHAN ANDERTON
When stunt coordinator Nick Gillard was developing the lightsaber battle between Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan, and Darth Maul, it needed the seal of approval of a very specific child.
George Lucas had instructed Gillard to "come up with a new kind of martial art," which the stunt coordinator described as "an amalgamation of all sword fighting.”
Gillard put together a five-minute demo reel showcasing the new lightsaber fighting style for Lucas to see, but the filmmaker wasn’t the only one they needed to impress.
As Lucas believes the "Star Wars" movies are for kids, he showed his son the test footage. As Gillard recalled to EW, "Effectively, Jett Lucas decided the style of that fight."
